Ghosts are expensive and have low HP. At day a mage kills a ghost with 2 hits. Drake Burners are also very good against ghosts. And ulfs (especially strong ones) have a high chance to destroy a full-health ghost at day (at other times they might need some support, such as from a Poacher). Dark Adept...

Cavalryman, definitely. As for how much gold - it depends on difficulty and on your recall list, so it's impossible to say for sure. But you should have enough gold for at least 2 full keeps of recalls if you intend to defeat enemy leaders.

You know you can increase the game's speed, right? With a high speed both movements and attacks are just a brief blink that lasts less than a second, so you can start a second attack right away.

One thing you're overlooking is that (in mainline, at least) a lot of units have no ranged attack (like Orcish Grunts) or very weak ranged attack (like the Loyalist Spearman).
